Abuse Counselling in Warwickshire
You Deserve to Be Heard, Believed and Supported
Experiencing abuse can have a profound impact on how you feel about yourself, your relationships and the world around you.
Whether the abuse happened recently, many years ago, or is something you are still living with, its effects can continue long after the abuse itself has ended.
You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, angry, ashamed, confused or emotionally numb. You may find it difficult to trust others, struggle with low self-esteem, or question your own thoughts and feelings.
Whatever your experience, you do not have to face it alone.
At Lotus Spirit Therapy, I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about your experiences and begin to make sense of how they may be affecting your life today.
Understanding Abuse
Abuse can take many forms and is not always physical.
Sometimes the signs are obvious. At other times, abuse can be subtle, leaving you feeling confused, powerless or questioning your own reality.
Abuse may include:
-
Emotional abuse
-
Physical abuse
-
Sexual abuse
-
Domestic abuse
-
Coercive control
-
Psychological abuse
-
Financial abuse
-
Neglect
-
Childhood abuse
Many people minimise their experiences or wonder whether what happened to them was "bad enough". If something has left you feeling frightened, unsafe, controlled, powerless or deeply hurt, your feelings matter and deserve to be acknowledged.
The Impact of Abuse
Everyone responds differently to abuse.
For some people, the effects are immediate. For others, they may not appear until months or years later.
You may experience:
-
Anxiety and panic
-
Low mood or depression
-
Flashbacks and intrusive memories
-
Difficulties trusting others
-
Low self-worth
-
Feelings of shame or guilt
-
People-pleasing behaviours
-
Relationship difficulties
-
Anger or irritability
-
Emotional numbness
-
Feeling constantly on edge
You may also notice yourself moving into fight, flight, freeze or fawn responses without fully understanding why. These are natural survival responses that often develop to help us cope during difficult or threatening experiences.

Childhood Abuse
Experiences in childhood can have a lasting impact on how we see ourselves and relate to others.
Growing up in an environment where you felt unsafe, criticised, neglected, controlled or unsupported can affect your confidence, self-esteem and relationships well into adulthood.
Often these experiences can leave us carrying beliefs about ourselves that no longer serve us, such as feeling unworthy, responsible for other people's feelings, or believing our needs do not matter.
Counselling can provide a space to gently explore these experiences and develop a greater understanding of how they may still be affecting you today.

My Experience
Alongside private practice, I spent nine years working within a specialist sexual abuse service supporting children, young people and families affected by abuse and trauma.
This experience has given me a deep understanding of the complex and lasting impact abuse can have on emotional wellbeing, relationships and sense of self.
My approach is warm, compassionate and trauma-informed, providing a space where you can feel heard, believed and supported.
